Deaths in Custody

Between 1950 and 1964, more people died in United States federal, state and county "mental institutions" than the number of Americans killed in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War 1, World War 11, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf War combined.
(Based on figures obtained from the Center for Mental Health Services in 1994, and statistics obtained from the 1995 Funk & Wagnalls "World Almanac and Book of Facts" Page 163)
