Children Saved from Ritalin

Under pressure from legislators and Citizens Commission on Human Rights, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida has signed a bill saying that school personnel cannot deny student’s access to school services or programs if their parent’s refuse a psychological screening, or refuse to place their child on psychotropic drugs.

The bill also places restrictions on the state Department of Children & Families when it comes to giving psychotropic drugs to foster children.

An alternative bill sponsored by Rep. Gustavo Barreiro was vetoed by Bush, but Barreiro has stated that he will file it again next year. That bill demands that school personnel disclose all the facts related to the taking of psychotropic drugs. Barreiro believes that many children are on psychotropic drugs such as Ritalin for the wrong reason.
